What did Coachella '99 actually cost?
Coachella '99 (the first one)
Historical recreation — figures are period estimates for demonstration. Names, venues, dates, and headline figures are documented history; line-item amounts are period-plausible reconstructions, never presented as historical fact.
The history
Oct 9–10, 1999 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio: Goldenvoice's first Coachella, with Beck, Tool, Rage Against the Machine and Morrissey topping a bill of nearly a hundred acts at $50 a day. Roughly 25,000 came the first day and fewer the second; the festival famously lost money (a loss of around $850,000 has been widely reported) and took 2000 off before returning — on its way to becoming the most important festival brand in North America. The line items below recreate where that money went.
Estimated attendance: 35,000–50,000.
The budget vs. the close
Top-line plan $2,200,000.00 · recorded actuals $2,417,000.00 — variance derived from the line items below, the way Wavemist computes it on every show.

Carbon footprint: 1999 vs. today
Directional, order-of-magnitude estimates for demonstration — methodology shown line by line, not a measured footprint. Factors are published per-unit values (US EPA 2024 Hub diesel at 10.21 kg CO₂e/US gal ≈ 2.68 kg/litre DEFRA-equivalent; eGRID grid kWh; DEFRA air travel) — where the in-product carbon registry already seeds a factor, the exact same value is used here.
The 1999 production, as modeled
| Source | Assumption | kg CO₂e |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel generator power (off-grid polo field) | 6 × 250 kW gensets, ~120 h build + show at ~9 gal/hr → 6,480 gal Factor: US EPA 2024 Hub, 10.21 kg CO2e/US gal diesel (seeded in the product carbon registry as generator.diesel-ulsd-per-gallon) | 66.2 t CO₂e |
| Trucking & freight | ≈40 loads from LA → ~11,200 truck-miles Factor: US EPA 2024 Hub, 0.9 kg CO2e/truck-mile (seeded in the product carbon registry as trucking.tractor-trailer-53ft-diesel) | 10.1 t CO₂e |
| Attendee travel (the dominant source) | ≈35,000 over two days, ~220 miles round trip from LA/SD, ~3 per car → 2,530,000 car-miles Factor: US EPA, 0.37 kg CO2e/car-mile (seeded in the product carbon registry as travel_ground.sedan-gas) | 936.1 t CO₂e |
| Artist & crew travel | ≈250 artists/crew (≈90 acts) on domestic round-trip flights Factor: DEFRA + RFI 1.9, 195 kg CO2e/domestic economy round trip (seeded in the product carbon registry as travel_air.domestic-economy-rt-us) | 48.8 t CO₂e |
| Waste to landfill | ≈35,000 people × ~2 kg landfilled each → ~70 t Factor: DEFRA 2024, ~446 kg CO2e/tonne mixed waste to landfill (0.446 kg/kg) | 31.2 t CO₂e |
| Period estimate, total | 1,092.3 t CO₂e | |
The same show with today's tech
Grid-tie + battery buffering + HVO in remaining gensets on: Diesel generator power (off-grid polo field)
−75% · saves 49.6 t CO₂e
The polo grounds can tie to the CA grid today (CAMX ~0.21 kg/kWh vs diesel); LED cuts lighting energy ~80–90% vs tungsten/PAR; HVO renewable diesel runs ~75% below ULSD per gallon (2.55 vs 10.21 kg, CARB LCFS best case).
Consolidated, routed trucking on: Trucking & freight
−20% · saves 2 t CO₂e
Load consolidation + routing software typically trims 15–25% of freight miles.
Shuttle-bus program from LA/SD + carpool passes on: Attendee travel (the dominant source)
−30% · saves 280.8 t CO₂e
Exactly what the modern festival runs; a desert drive-to crowd is still the biggest line.
Travel routing + economy-class policy on: Artist & crew travel
−10% · saves 4.9 t CO₂e
Itinerary consolidation; flying is flying.
Waste diversion (recycle/compost) on: Waste to landfill
−50% · saves 15.6 t CO₂e
Modern recycling/compost programs routinely divert half the waste stream from landfill.
The headline
≈32% lower with a modern, Wavemist-tracked production
1,092.3 t CO₂e then → ≈739.4 t CO₂e with today's tech. The honest residual is the part no rig can fix — people getting to the show.
In Wavemist, this isn't a separate spreadsheet: carbon is computed from the same line items you already budget — the trucking line that prices the bid is the trucking line that counts the miles.

With Wavemist — the retro analysis
the reported ~$850k loss is a break-even story — ticket price times realistic attendance against a locked budget makes the gap visible at bid time, and BidSmith prices a talent-heavy lineup against real revenue scenarios before contracts go out.
