What did LoveFest SF actually cost?
LoveFest San Francisco
Historical recreation — figures are period estimates for demonstration. Names, venues, dates, and headline figures are documented history; line-item amounts are period-plausible reconstructions, never presented as historical fact.
The history
San Francisco's incarnation of Berlin's Love Parade: starting in 2004 (later renamed LoveFest, then Lovevolution), sound-system floats rolled down Market Street to a free dance festival at Civic Center Plaza, with crowds estimated from tens of thousands up to ~100,000. Free to attend and funded by donations and sponsors, its budget was dominated by what civic events really cost — police, street closures, barricades and cleanup billed to the organizers. Date shown is a representative edition; treat as approximate.
Estimated attendance: 50,000–100,000.
The budget vs. the close
Top-line plan $350,000.00 · recorded actuals $361,000.00 — variance derived from the line items below, the way Wavemist computes it on every show.

Carbon footprint: 2008 vs. today
Directional, order-of-magnitude estimates for demonstration — methodology shown line by line, not a measured footprint. Factors are published per-unit values (US EPA 2024 Hub diesel at 10.21 kg CO₂e/US gal ≈ 2.68 kg/litre DEFRA-equivalent; eGRID grid kWh; DEFRA air travel) — where the in-product carbon registry already seeds a factor, the exact same value is used here.
The 2008 production, as modeled
| Source | Assumption | kg CO₂e |
|---|---|---|
| Float generator power | ≈25 sound floats, each a small genset at ~2 gal/hr × 8 h → 400 gal Factor: US EPA 2024 Hub, 10.21 kg CO2e/US gal diesel (seeded in the product carbon registry as generator.diesel-ulsd-per-gallon) | 4.1 t CO₂e |
| Main-stage generator power | 2 × 100 kW gensets at Civic Center × ~12 h at ~4 gal/hr → 96 gal Factor: US EPA 2024 Hub, 10.21 kg CO2e/US gal diesel (seeded in the product carbon registry as generator.diesel-ulsd-per-gallon) | 980 kg CO₂e |
| Float & barricade logistics | Floats, fencing and barricade in box trucks → ~1,500 miles Factor: US EPA 2024 Hub, 0.55 kg CO2e/mile (seeded in the product carbon registry as trucking.box-truck-26ft-diesel) | 825 kg CO₂e |
| Attendee travel (the dominant source) | ≈75,000 attendees, mostly transit/walk; ~25% drive ~20 miles round trip at 2.5/car → 150,000 car-miles Factor: US EPA, 0.37 kg CO2e/car-mile (seeded in the product carbon registry as travel_ground.sedan-gas) | 55.5 t CO₂e |
| Waste to landfill | ≈75,000 people × ~1 kg landfilled each → ~75 t (the famous Market Street cleanup) Factor: DEFRA 2024, ~446 kg CO2e/tonne mixed waste to landfill (0.446 kg/kg) | 33.5 t CO₂e |
| Period estimate, total | 94.8 t CO₂e | |
The same show with today's tech
Battery-electric sound floats on: Float generator power
−80% · saves 3.3 t CO₂e
Parade-scale battery rigs are off-the-shelf now; charged off the CA grid.
Grid-tie at Civic Center + battery buffering on: Main-stage generator power
−85% · saves 833 kg CO₂e
The plaza has house power; diesel was convenience, not necessity.
Consolidated, routed logistics on: Float & barricade logistics
−20% · saves 165 kg CO₂e
Load consolidation + routing software typically trims 15–25% of freight miles.
Transit incentives on: Attendee travel (the dominant source)
−15% · saves 8.3 t CO₂e
Already one of the most transit-served sites in America — small honest lever.
Waste diversion (recycle/compost) on: Waste to landfill
−50% · saves 16.7 t CO₂e
Modern recycling/compost programs routinely divert half the waste stream from landfill.
The headline
≈31% lower with a modern, Wavemist-tracked production
94.8 t CO₂e then → ≈65.5 t CO₂e with today's tech. The honest residual is the part no rig can fix — people getting to the show.
In Wavemist, this isn't a separate spreadsheet: carbon is computed from the same line items you already budget — the trucking line that prices the bid is the trucking line that counts the miles.
