What did Outside Lands '08 actually cost?

Outside Lands 2008 (inaugural)

Historical recreation — figures are period estimates for demonstration. Names, venues, dates, and headline figures are documented history; line-item amounts are period-plausible reconstructions, never presented as historical fact.

The history

Aug 22–24, 2008: the first Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park, produced by Another Planet Entertainment with Superfly and Starr Hill. Radiohead's Friday set was the park's first major nighttime amplified concert; Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Jack Johnson closed the other nights, with ~50–60,000 a day and 150,000+ for the weekend. Producing inside a city park — Rec & Park fees, sound curfews, neighborhood logistics — defines this budget file.

Estimated attendance: 150,000–170,000.

Carbon footprint: 2008 vs. today

Directional, order-of-magnitude estimates for demonstration — methodology shown line by line, not a measured footprint. Factors are published per-unit values (US EPA 2024 Hub diesel at 10.21 kg CO₂e/US gal ≈ 2.68 kg/litre DEFRA-equivalent; eGRID grid kWh; DEFRA air travel) — where the in-product carbon registry already seeds a factor, the exact same value is used here.

The 2008 production, as modeled

SourceAssumptionkg CO₂e
Diesel generator power (meadow stages)12 × 250 kW gensets across the park, ~120 h at ~9 gal/hr → 12,960 gal Factor: US EPA 2024 Hub, 10.21 kg CO2e/US gal diesel (seeded in the product carbon registry as generator.diesel-ulsd-per-gallon)132.3 t CO₂e
Trucking & freight≈120 regional loads, inter-meadow moves included → ~12,000 truck-miles Factor: US EPA 2024 Hub, 0.9 kg CO2e/truck-mile (seeded in the product carbon registry as trucking.tractor-trailer-53ft-diesel)10.8 t CO₂e
Attendee travel (the dominant source)≈160,000 attendee-days; ~40% drive ~30 miles round trip at 2.5/car → 768,000 car-miles (SF is transit-heavy) Factor: US EPA, 0.37 kg CO2e/car-mile (seeded in the product carbon registry as travel_ground.sedan-gas)284.2 t CO₂e
Artist & crew travel≈400 artists/crew (60-act bill) on domestic round-trip flights Factor: DEFRA + RFI 1.9, 195 kg CO2e/domestic economy round trip (seeded in the product carbon registry as travel_air.domestic-economy-rt-us)78 t CO₂e
Hotels≈800 artist/crew room-nights Factor: Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking 2023, 25 kg CO2e/room-night (seeded in the product carbon registry as travel_hotel.room-night-us-avg)20 t CO₂e
Waste to landfill≈160,000 attendee-days × ~1.5 kg landfilled each → ~240 t Factor: DEFRA 2024, ~446 kg CO2e/tonne mixed waste to landfill (0.446 kg/kg)107 t CO₂e

The same show with today's tech

  • Grid-tie + battery buffering + renewable diesel on: Diesel generator power (meadow stages)

    −80% · saves 105.9 t CO₂e

Outside Lands itself now runs grid-tied and renewable-diesel stages — this swap is field-proven at this exact site.

  • Consolidated, routed trucking on: Trucking & freight

    −25% · saves 2.7 t CO₂e

Load consolidation + routing software typically trims 15–25% of freight miles.

  • Transit push (Muni/shuttle partnerships) on: Attendee travel (the dominant source)

    −20% · saves 56.8 t CO₂e

Already transit-heavy; the lever is real but smaller.

  • Travel routing + economy-class policy on: Artist & crew travel

    −10% · saves 7.8 t CO₂e

    Itinerary consolidation; flying is flying.

  • Green-power hotel block on: Hotels

    −30% · saves 6 t CO₂e

Room blocks at properties on renewable tariffs.

  • Waste diversion (recycle/compost) on: Waste to landfill

    −60% · saves 64.2 t CO₂e

The modern festival posts industry-leading diversion rates.

The headline

≈39% lower with a modern, Wavemist-tracked production

632.3 t CO₂e then → ≈388.9 t CO₂e with today's tech. The honest residual is the part no rig can fix — people getting to the show.

In Wavemist, this isn't a separate spreadsheet: carbon is computed from the same line items you already budget — the trucking line that prices the bid is the trucking line that counts the miles.

With Wavemist — the retro analysis

a Golden Gate Park build is a city-fee and union-labor puzzle — the CBA labor engine prices the calls, the meal-penalty and turnaround levers catch multi-stage scheduling traps, and park permits sit as tracked line items instead of email threads.
